Poodles are the smartest breed

These are the smartest (and dumbest) breeds of dogs in the world

Do you think that your dog is particularly smart? The ranking of the psychologist Stanley Coren tells you whether your four-legged friend is actually blessed with extraordinary intelligence - or rather brings up the rear of the smart dogs ...

These dog breeds are intelligence beasts

In his book "The Intelligence of Dogs", Coren explains that it is of course not that easy to find out whether a dog is really smart or not. He therefore limited his investigation to working intelligence, which provides information about how well a dog obeys your commands, explains the "Business Insider". For his book, Coren examined observations from 199 judges at dog competitions.

Top 10 smartest dog breeds

  1. Border collie
  2. poodle
  3. German shepherd dog
  4. Golden retriever
  5. Doberman Pinscher
  6. Shetland Sheepdog
  7. Labrador Retriever
  8. Papillon
  9. rottweiler
  10. Australian Cattle Dog

And the result is pretty clear: According to Coren, the smartest breed of dog in the world is the border collie. He can learn new commands after less than five repetitions and then follow them in 95 percent of all cases. The poodle lands in second place, followed by the German Shepherd Dog.

What makes a smart dog?

But obedience is not the only criterion by which a smart dog can be recognized - social, instinctive and adaptive intelligence can also provide information. If these criteria were examined separately, the ranking of the smartest dog breeds could quickly look very different.

Incidentally, the bulldog, Basenji and Afghan hound breeds bring up the rear in the “Working Intelligence” category.

But that doesn't mean that these races are particularly stupid. The Dutch behaviorist Frans de Waal has concerns that the Afghan Hound, for example, may be too clever and stubborn to submit to human commands.
