How important this quality is at the management level, Goleman describes in his standard work of the same name "Emotional Intelligence". For the filling of a managerial position, the degree of emotional intelligence is even more important than the intelligence quotient. According to Goleman, individual specialist knowledge and intelligence quotient are only included in the assessment of an applicant at 25 percent each - emotional intelligence, however, at 50 percent.
It should come as no surprise that emotional intelligence has become so important when filling management positions. The higher the position in a company, the more important interdisciplinary skills become. In the modern work process, managers coordinate and promote the individual resources of their employees. You lead different talents and personalities in order to ensure the success of the company at all levels. The manager is responsible for defining responsibilities, bundling different energies and developing goals. Emotional intelligence can decisively promote and advance the accomplishment of these tasks.
Emotional intelligence is not a gift of fate, but a combination of individual skills that can be learned. It includes all areas that are necessary for processing inter- and intrapersonal information. The use of emotional intelligence can be continuously refined and opens up valuable advantages for managers and employees.

Characteristics of emotional intelligence
According to Goleman, emotional intelligence is composed of five competencies:

3. Characteristics of emotional intelligence: empathy
The ability to perceive other people's emotional states and react appropriately. In a professional context, it is important to satisfy the unspoken needs of employees and customers and to recognize and resolve conflicts at an early stage.
4. Characteristics of Emotional Intelligence: Motivation
The ability to get yourself and others excited about specific tasks. Exact knowledge of one's own personality and the potential and needs of employees enables successful motivational incentives to be created.
5. Characteristics of Emotional Intelligence: Social competence
To develop communication structures in a professional context, to make contacts and to build sustainable relationships. This includes internal relationship management as well as network maintenance.
