Homeschooling in Corona times: 4 (free) learning programs for schoolchildren

Table of Contents

Because of the corona pandemic, schoolchildren are currently having a hard time. After normal school life had picked up speed in mid-2020, there is no longer any sign of the upswing. After the Christmas holidays, the federal states each set their own regulations for schoolchildren - and these were also continuously adapted. Sometimes graduating classes are allowed to go to school and sometimes only hybrid lessons take place. Younger people, on the other hand, often have to stay at home all day. Not good prerequisites for students, because when it comes to homeschooling, i.e. the home office for students, schools cannot show any great success. According to a representative survey by the Bitkom digital association, parents failed teaching facilities - with an average grade of "poor". But there are still ways to provide children with knowledge outside of the school premises. And thanks to learning apps and learning programs, they don't necessarily have to be made of paper and fold out.

So-called learning programs or learning apps can help the youngsters - for example during the holidays, on weekends or simply in the afternoon. We have selected four (partly free) learning programs for you and your child, and these are vastly superior to ordinary school books. Because, depending on the application, they offer easy-to-understand explanatory videos, interactive exercises (matching the curricula) and help with homework via WhatsApp.

Studysmarter - The basic program is free

First of all, there is the Studysmarter learning app. Normally, the light version can be used free of charge, but if you are not satisfied with the basic functions, you have to put something over 2 euros up to almost 180 euros on the table (in-app purchases). Certain learning units can be activated in this way.

With Studysmarter, your children can, among other things, create their own summaries and index cards, share learning content with the community and access professional content from the publisher. And of course the application also offers numerous practice questions and explanations.

If you want to take advantage of the free offer, you must first register on the Studysmarter website. The associated learning app can be downloaded from both Google's Play Store and Apple's App Store. The number of downloads in the Play Store has already exceeded the 500,000 mark. That and the rather high rating (4.4 out of 5 stars) indicate positive user experiences. In addition, Studysmarter can show the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the list of its partners.

Duden Learnattack - learning program with discount campaign

The online platform Duden Learnattack offered free access during the first lockdown. Now the campaign is long over, but membership can still be worthwhile. Especially since interested parties currently get a discount of 20 percent - although this has been available for many months. This means that the premium subscription costs 13.52 euros per month. It includes all the important functions (see below). With the PremiumPlus subscription, these are supplemented by a parents' area with learning statistics, homework help via WhatsApp and a vocabulary trainer. However, the price is then 17.52 euros per month.

It is also interesting at this point that Learnattack offers both a 48-hour trial period and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The learning program is aimed at students from the 4th grade up to the Abitur. Among other things, users can access over 40,000 explanatory videos from nine different subjects (biology, chemistry, German, English, French, history, Latin, mathematics and physics) and then have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in interactive exercises directly on the screen. As soon as the material is in place, the newly acquired knowledge can be put to the test in real classwork. It should be noted, however, that the offer is not available as an app, i.e. an application for iOS or Android. It can only be used on the desktop or in a browser.

Simpleclub - learning program with tiered costs

Another tutorial is called Simpleclub. Many pupils and students are already familiar with this term from YouTube, where the company offers numerous explanatory videos on various topics. The same learning videos are also included in the subscription in larger numbers (over 3,000 pieces). This also includes individual learning plans for exams, interactive exercises and summaries. The offer comprises eleven subjects from the 7th grade onwards. There is also an app for Apple or Android devices.

The premium version of the program, Simpleclub Unlimited, can be booked for one, six or twelve months. The associated prices range from 16.49 euros per month, over 9.99 euros per month to 7.49 euros per month. The following applies: If you book a longer period, you have to pay less for the same content. A basic version, which used to cost just under 4 euros per month and included access to all learning videos, does not seem to exist any longer. Play Store Rating: 4.1 stars out of 5.

Anton - learning app for the little ones too

Anton generally offers all learning content free of charge and without advertising, but in-app purchases from 4 to 40 euros are also possible in the application. Nonetheless, the learning program is extremely popular. In Android's Play Store alone, the corresponding application has been downloaded over a million times and the associated ratings are an excellent 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Basically, Anton offers over 100,000 tasks, 200 interactive exercise types, explanations and learning games - and all of this to match the curricula of the individual federal states. When performing the exercises, users receive various rewards in the form of stars, trophies and learning games. The offer is not only aimed at older students, as is the case with a large part of the competition, but also at all students from 1st to 10th grade.
