With which types of fruit should the peel not be eaten?

The skin of some types of fruit is bitter or tough. With these fruits, it would hardly occur to anyone to eat the peel with them. Typical examples are bananas, mangoes or citrus fruits. In the case of citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges and mandarins, the peel can also be heavily contaminated. Other types of fruit, such as apples, on the other hand, are particularly healthy if you also eat the peel. It is important that the bowl is washed thoroughly beforehand in order to remove any harmful substances.

Many types of fruit have a particularly large number of healthy ingredients in or directly under their skin. If you remove the shell, they are lost unused. Accordingly, it is advisable for many types of fruit to be eaten with the peel. Common varieties include apples, pears, peaches, apricots, nectarines, and plums.

It is a widespread assumption that eating the peel could be hazardous to health because various pesticides are used in fruit growing. However, if you wash treated fruit thoroughly, you can then consume it without hesitation. Washing can also remove the natural or artificially applied wax layer from apples, which serves to increase the shelf life. The layer is considered harmless to health anyway, but it can leave an uncomfortable furry feeling on the tongue.

The peel of citrus fruits occupy a special position because they are always pretreated with agents that are not suitable for consumption. Otherwise they would spoil too quickly. The consumption of citrus fruits is nevertheless harmless, as the peel is inedible anyway and is therefore not eaten with it. For lemon zest for baking or cooking or adding sliced ​​citrus fruits to drinks, we recommend using untreated organic products.
