Why did you choose to work abroad

overviewWorking abroad professionally

You can combine travel and work with the three options mentioned above. If you've decided to stay in one place, there are five options for you to choose from.

Expat of your own company

Expats work as employees for their company abroad. In large corporations, it is common for employees to spend some time abroad. In fact, it's essential for a fast career. Going abroad as an expat with your own company has many advantages.

You know the company and the structures. You keep your position if it doesn't even improve. As before, the employee pays all social security contributions under German law, even if you have to pay attention to the details of a job abroad. When you finish your time abroad, you will return to a secure job at home.

Expat in a new company

Even if more and more German companies are doing business abroad, only a small number of them have their own branch there. Without a branch abroad, working as an expat is logically not possible.

You can still go this route if you are ready to change jobs. On the well-known job exchanges, positions are regularly advertised that are associated with a longer stay abroad. So you still have the chance to move to another company and work for it as an expat. This gives you all the advantages that you have as an expat in your own company.

Local company employee

Unless you choose to live in the middle of the Amazon, there will be businesses in your new place of residence too. You can also apply for jobs directly at a local company.

The same principles apply worldwide as in Germany. There are more jobs in metropolitan areas and fewer in rural areas. Depending on your specialty, some areas are more likely than others. For example, if you work as an irrigation engineer, it will be easier to find a job in Dubai than in Copenhagen. A good command of the local language is essential for employment with a local company. If you decide to take this path, you should attend a language course beforehand and acquire the knowledge.

Establish your own local business

There is a healthy economy in your desired location, but not the job you are looking for? Then you can start your own local business. To do this, you need to be good at your job and have an entrepreneurial spirit. In addition, you must be able to speak the language. There is practically no on-site business where you don't come into contact with local customers. Without some proper form of communication, you will not make these people your customers. This applies from dentists to roofers.

Freelancer offline

As an offline freelancer, you will always work where you are needed. You work on your own account and are not employed by the company that employs you.

Many companies bring in external knowledge in-house when faced with difficult problems. This happens through traditional consulting firms, but also through interim managers. These are not infrequently active as freelancers. They then stay with a client for a certain period of time and do their job there. This can be the case from a few months to several years. For example, if a company wants to set up a completely new sales division, it can get the knowledge of an expert for this. This then not only advises on the processes, but also carries them out himself. When the department is set up and all processes are running, he can focus on the next project.
