What is testosterone?

Both men and women have the hormone testosterone, but in different amounts. In the male body the hormone is produced in the testicles, in the female body in the ovaries and adrenal glands. Testosterone is also responsible for muscle growth, the breakdown of body fat, energy conversion, as well as the ability to think and concentrate. Testosterone in the female body

With the first day of your cycle, the onset of your period, the testosterone level in the body also rises again and reaches its peak on the day of ovulation. During this time, the desire for sex is greatest due to the rising testosterone. If there is a suspicion of an increased testosterone level, this is measured between the third and fifth day with a blood test. The optimal values ​​are between 0.14 and 0.76 µg / l. If it is more than 0.76 µg / l, one speaks of a testosterone excess. Often this can also lead to an excess of estrogen, as the estrogen is formed from testosterone.

In the second half of the cycle, the testosterone level drops again up to the period. During this time, the testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which controls the production of sebum. Too much testosterone has a negative effect on sebum production: more sebum is produced in the skin glands. These clog and form a breeding ground for bacteria, which causes small inflammations or pimples. If the period starts after another 14 days on average, the testosterone level rises again.

Excess testosterone: symptoms

An increased testosterone level can cause the following symptoms:

Elevated testosterone levels can be dangerous

A study from the University of Cambridge found that excess testosterone levels can have dangerous effects on women's health. For example, a genetically determined excess of the hormone is said to increase the risk of diabetes and breast and cervical cancer, among other things.

Influence of hormonal contraception on testosterone levels

If women stop using hormonal contraceptives such as the pill, hormonal IUD or the Nuva ring, it often happens that the endocrine system is messed up and testosterone dominates over other hormones. Normally, the hormones level off again within about half a year. For some women this can be faster or slower, after all, every body is different. After stopping the contraceptive, it is testosterone that often causes pimples, acne, hair loss and menstrual disorders. If the hormones do not settle on their own, it is advisable to seek out a gynecologist or endocrinologist.

However, an increased consumption of soy products can also disrupt the thyroid function or lead to gastrointestinal problems in sensitive people.
  5. Rely on omega-3 fatty acids and lignans
