Too young to be taken seriously, but too old to be “young” again: 5 unexpected ups and downs of being 22

As Taylor Swift once said, 'I don't know about you, but I feel 22'. As a 22 year old, I can agree that I still have nights when my friends and I make fun of our exes, eat breakfast at midnight and occasionally fall in love with strangers ... or kiss them drunk in bars.

Yes, 22 is a wonderful age, an age when our parents wish they were 'young' again, and an age when our older siblings feel even older. But while 22 can feel as happy as the Taylor Swift song promises, 22 has its downsides too. Here are the best pros and cons of having a 22 year old child.

Pros: We have little to no commitments

This can apply to many areas in our 22-year life. Most 22-year-olds today are not married and do not own homes that require mortgages. Keyword, most. Yes, there are exceptions (especially when you see Teen Mom), but most of us don't have those obligations. This means that we are free from the forces that can hold us back and hold us in one place. We could pack a bag and a road trip across the country or jet set across continents if we wanted, and indeed many of us do.

Songs about how you still love your ex

The beauty of not having many commitments means we can do the most random things from (I won't admit it) the most selfish reasons. Let's go backpacking Europe, get off the plane, get the tattoo we've always wanted, and simply because we want it and never have it before. 22 is an age where it's okay to be a little selfish because it's an age where we try to find ourselves, clichéd as it may be, without worrying about someone else to be careful.

Con: People think we're not focused

We test the water with our numerous interests and passions. Some people may consider this our ADHD driven generation, but the simple fact that we have numerous interests and passions should be a good thing! Maybe we're a bit scattered. We may love reading classic literature, but we also love watching the fistfight of trashy reality housewives on national television. We may be interested in many different things, often very opposite things. However, this is better than going through life indifferently and having no interests or opinions at all. The best part about how diverse the interests and passions may be is how many opportunities each of those interests presents. What other people find unfocused in our 22-year-old brains, in my opinion, allows our infinite creativity.

Pros: We're still young enough to explore the possibilities.

At 22, it's okay to take a job that we know we probably won't do for the rest of our lives. We test the water in terms of career paths, and when we find a job that we want to pull our hair out at, we can try to take a new direction and find out what else is out there without feeling ashamed or unproductive have to . People seem to understand when a 22-year-old hasn't thought through his entire life, and for that we can breathe a little easier. There are tons of forks on the road and we may be using the wrong pen, but it won't be long before we come across another one.

Con: Too young to be taken seriously, but too old to be young again.

We're old enough to graduate from college and when we get back to our Alma business we feel like dinosaurs, but when we try to break into the real world of work we seem to be the babies. While we may not fit into our old college days as our alcohol tolerances dissolve, we may not fit into the professional world either. The 22 year olds obviously don't have much work experience in terms of actual careers as we were in school other than internships and working at Abercrombie or Starbucks. We need experience to get a job, but we need a job to gain experience. 22 is the age at which people still see us as college kids, kids who may have fresh perspectives and young creative minds, but who may or may not be taken seriously, or take themselves worse. It sounds like we're young and still in that college state of mind, but we have goals to achieve, dreams to fulfill, and springboards to step on. 22 isn't just fun and games, we can mean it too.

Pro: We have our whole life ahead of us.

We may hear this from our parents when we complain about getting older, but that's the truth. We have been on this earth for 22 years and instead of feeling old and aging and that life is only getting tougher, we should a). feel grateful for the long 22 years that we have been given and b). Look ahead and find that at this point in our lives we are limitless. We are 22, which means that in those 22 long years of learning about the world in school, we can finally go out and discover it for ourselves.
