How can you treat grade 1 gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia

Many men suffer from gynecomastia, a benign enlargement of the male mammary gland. From a health point of view, surgery is usually not necessary for gynecomastia, but a pronounced female breast shape can considerably impair the self-esteem of the men concerned. In such cases, gynecomastia surgery can help.

Goals of gynecomastia treatment

With 1,036 treatments performed in 2019, gynecomastia is one of the top 5 procedures for men. This is an increase of 20% compared to the previous year.[1]

With gynecomastia treatment, a permanent, aesthetically pleasing breast is achieved in order to minimize the mental stress of the man and to increase his well-being.

Since there are different causes of gynecomastia, the doctor must distinguish between two forms when making a diagnosis: If hormonal changes are responsible for the abnormal growth of the mammary gland tissue, it is “real” gynecomastia. If, on the other hand, the enlarged breast can be traced back to pure fat deposits, one speaks of lipomastia (also pseudogynecomastia). This "wrong" form of gynecomastia occurs in overweight and obese people. Depending on the symptoms, the breast may be reduced in size using different methods.

How do you recognize gynecomastia?

A female breast growth in men is called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can be unilateral or bilateral in the chest area. It is caused by a change in the balance between female sex hormones (estrogens) and the male sex hormone (testosterone). The proportion of the female messenger substance, which is always present in the man's body in small quantities, increases. The causes of gynecomastia are usually hormonal and can only be determined by a doctor.

Who Will Determine Gynecomastia?

Men who notice increased breast growth should see a doctor. Only the doctor can determine whether it is real or just pseudogynecomastia. In pseudogynecomastia, only fat is stored in the breast, usually caused by being overweight, while real gynecomastia often has hormonal causes.

Is Gynecomastia a Disease?

Gynecomastia is actually not a disease in its own right, but just a symptom. Therefore, the causes - mostly hormonal - must be found in order to be able to guarantee a suitable therapy option. Often it is temporary hormone fluctuations that cause gynecomastia. Unfortunately, gynecomastia rarely resolves once hormone levels have returned to normal. In this respect, surgical removal of the breast is often considered.

After a detailed examination, the doctor and the patient decide which breast reduction method is suitable for men and what the costs are. In Germany, gynecomastia treatment costs between € 1,800 and € 3,500.[2]

Since in most cases it is a purely cosmetic procedure, the costs for the treatment of gynecomastia are usually to be borne by yourself. However, if the attending physician certifies a medical necessity, some statutory and private health insurances will cover the costs or grant a subsidy. Therefore, it is advisable to do detailed research before treatment.

Does the health insurance company pay for the treatment of gynecomastia?

The health insurance companies only cover the costs of treating gynecomastia if it is true gynecomastia (increased breast tissue in men). There must be a medically necessary indication for this. So there must be psychological and / or physical suffering. The assumption of the treatment costs is an individual decision of the relevant health insurance fund.

Is it possible to pay in installments?

Many doctors and clinics offer various financing and installment payment models for the treatment of gynecomastia. Financing or payment in installments for the treatment is possible if the creditworthiness is appropriate.

What is included in the cost of gynecomastia surgery?

The costs of a gynecomastia operation include, among other things, the anesthesia, the operation team, the doctor's fee, as well as aftercare including compression clothing and any accommodation costs.

Gynecomastia or lipomastia

Not all male breast development is caused by enlarged glands. Doctors therefore differentiate between the real form of gynecomastia and lipomastia (also known as pseudogynecomastia), in which the growth of the breast is caused solely by adipose tissue. Depending on the symptoms, different methods are used for breast reduction in men.

Which doctor is an option for gynecomastia?

For the choice of the right doctor, among other things, the specialization in the field of gynecomastia and the specialist title are important. Doctors and facilities that also bear the myBody® seal of quality meet certain quality criteria and commit to adhering to strict quality standards. These certified doctors and facilities are listed in the myBody® clinic finder.

What methods are there?

Which method is used to treat gynecomastia always depends on the type of development and the extent of the breast formation. Therefore, a detailed consultation about history and expectations as well as a physical examination is very important.

Surgery

If hormonal changes lead to an increase in the glandular tissue, it is the "real" gynecomastia. In this case, the breast tissue usually has to be removed by surgery. To do this, a small incision is made on the edge of the nipple through which excess tissue and possibly body fat can be removed. In order to combat breast enlargement sustainably, subsequent hormone therapy may often be necessary.

Liposuction

If the enlargement of the breast can be traced back to pure fat deposits, it is the "wrong" gynecomastia, also called pseudogynecomastia or lipomastia. With this method, a liquid is injected through a small opening on the side of the chest muscle, which causes the fat cells to float up. The surgeon can then suction off the fat cells and excess tissue with a thin cannula. The minimally invasive procedure can be carried out on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia. If the man is only anesthetized locally, he is given an additional sedative. This twilight sleep makes the man insensitive to pain.

With liposuction, too, it occasionally happens that excess tissue has to be removed, but only if the skin does not contract to the expected extent. If the breasts are very large, it may be necessary to tighten the skin afterwards.

Which gynecomastia treatment method is right for me?

First of all, the doctor must diagnose whether it is real gynecomastia or lipomastia. If the breast is enlarged due to fat deposits, the breast can be reduced with liposuction. If there is an increased amount of mammary gland tissue, the surgeon makes an incision on the lower edge of the areola during the operation and removes the excess tissue. Usually both interventions are combined with one another.

Can gynecomastia come back after surgery?

In rare cases, the male breasts can enlarge again after an operation. It is therefore important to rule out hormonal causes before the operation. The new growth also depends on how much glandular tissue or how many fat cells were removed during the operation. If an almost complete removal has been carried out, a renewed formation of the male breast is usually unlikely. After an operation, it is important to exercise and to eat a balanced diet.

When does surgery make sense for gynecomastia?

In principle, an operation on a man's bosom makes sense if drug and hormone therapies are unsuccessful and if the quality of life is clearly limited by psychological distress or physical limitations or complaints. An operation can eliminate the symptoms and strengthen male self-confidence.

What are the risks?

In general, surgical treatment of gynecomastia is considered to be safe and efficient with few complications. However, as with any other surgical procedure, risks cannot be completely ruled out. In addition to undesirable reactions to the anesthetic, there may be wound healing disorders or longer-lasting after-effects in individual cases, which can usually be compensated for by administering medication or small corrective interventions. Careful selection of an experienced specialist as well as thorough pre- and post-operative care can reduce the risk to a minimum.

The mybody clinic finder provides you with information on the procedure and provides an overview of specialists in plastic-aesthetic surgery with brief profiles of the respective services, prices and other services.

What are the risks of gynecomastia surgery?

Although surgical techniques and preventive surgical measures are getting better and safer, complications during operations can never be completely ruled out. General risks of gynecomastia surgery are swelling, bruising and tightness in the chest. These side effects are normal to a certain extent and usually heal with cooling.

Will scars remain visible after gynecomastia surgery?

The incision is usually made on the lower edge of the nipple. The crescent-shaped incision is placed in the transition to the areola. This places the scar relatively inconspicuously. If only fat is sucked off, almost invisible scars remain.

When can I do sports again after gynecomastia surgery?

As a rule, patients should refrain from exercising for 4-6 weeks after gynecomastia surgery. Physically strenuous activities (e.g. work-related) should also be avoided.
