The processor generations:

Gamers can choose the basis for their desired configuration from a total of four different processor generations. Technically, there are some differences between AMD and Intel: The AMD Ryzen processors based on the AM4 socket have been available on the market for several years and are technically mature accordingly. There are advantages due to the high number of CPU cores at an affordable price, especially in connection with DirectX 12, large leaps in performance are possible here. The current generation of these processors, AMD Ryzen 5000, is currently the fastest option in both games and applications.

Intel's latest Comet Lake processors based on the 1200 socket focus on the strengths of their predecessor. The generations are technically similar, the differences in gaming performance are on average around 10 percent with the same clock rates. With sometimes extremely high performance per core and highest clock rates (e.g. Intel Core i9 10900K with up to 5.3 GHz turbo clock), these processors are still a good choice for gamers who want high performance in games and can live with compromises in other areas of application.

Above the mainstream Ryzen processors, AMD places the AMD Threadripper processors, which offer extreme performance in applications, but deliver a little less clock per core. However, this platform is only partially aimed at pure gamers, also due to the high price. Nevertheless, these processors offer considerable performance for games and only perform slightly worse than the Ryzen processors with fewer cores but more clock speed. Basically we recommend the Threadripper processors but rather prosumers, creators and workstation users.

Via Comet Lake, Intel is positioning the Cascade Lake-X processors, which, like AMD's Threadripper CPUs, primarily rely on a higher number of cores and threads and are therefore also aimed at prosumers, creators and workstation users. However, AMD offers the rounder package here - in the gaming area, AMD's Threadripper processors are a bit ahead, but in the application area these processors are significantly faster. The cheaper entry into the current generation and the more sophisticated technology speak for Intel. As with AMD, we recommend gamers to use mainstream processors. Comet Lake processors almost always offer better performance in games for considerably less money.

The right cooler:

The high performance of current CPUs naturally results in an equally high amount of waste heat, the cooling must be dimensioned correctly - but our configurator always warns you about coolers that are too small. In general, a distinction can be made between two approaches with conventional cooling solutions: the classic tower cooler, in which the heat is conducted through heat pipes to a heat sink with a large surface on which a fan is mounted. The advantage of these solutions is often the low price, the simple installation and the quiet operation. Scythe Mugen 5 Rev. B or be quiet! So-called all-in-one water cooling systems are an alternative. Here, a heat sink with a water pump is mounted on the processor, which is connected to a so-called radiator via hoses. The radiator is to be understood as a large heat sink, which, thanks to fine fins, has a large surface that can absorb a lot of waste heat. Fans are mounted on the radiator, which transport the heat from the radiator out of the housing and cool the water. The biggest advantage: the sometimes greatly increased cooling capacity. In terms of volume, these AiO coolers are hardly inferior to large air coolers, but a correspondingly large surcharge is due here. The price range from 1,250 to 1,500 euros is characterized by the new AMD processors such as the Ryzen 7 5800X and the Intel Core i5 and i7 processors from Intel. The Core i5-10600K is already suitable for overclocking attempts thanks to an open multiplier, but should be combined with a high-quality motherboard with an Intel Z490 chipset for this purpose. All AMD processors of the Ryzen series can also be overclocked, in this case too a high-quality motherboard with a B550 or X570 chipset should be chosen - good CPU and case cooling is also an advantage for this project.

If the budget for the new gaming PC over 1,500 euros Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 9 5900X form the perfect basis. These processors impress with their extremely high performance in games, whereby Intel brings a little more performance in many games - especially interesting for players with monitors that have a higher refresh rate, e.g. 144Hz or even up to 300Hz. The selected graphics cards must also be correspondingly strong. The AMD Ryzen 9 5950X with 16 CPU cores delivers maximum performance in games and at the same time in applications.

General tip: the CPU load hardly increases with a higher resolution, this is primarily at the expense of the graphics card. At higher resolutions, the graphics card is usually the bottleneck, so a combination of Intel Core i5 and RTX 2080 Ti is quite plausible if, for example, 4K gaming with 60FPS is desired. However, if you want the highest possible FPS or if you have CPU-heavy games on your wish list, a combination of a powerful processor and a powerful graphics card is ideal.
