How much do domains and hosting cost
How much will website hosting cost in 2021?
So you've decided to set up a website. Be it a personal website or an ecommerce to support your business, once you get your feet wet this money question will hit you: How much should I spend on web hosting?
Different costs for a website
There are a number of factors that you need to consider when calculating the cost of a website. All factors can vary widely depending on how complex or simple your requirements are. However, the main costs of building a website are as follows:
- Web hosting
- Content creation
- Graphic design
- Web development
- Marketing and others
In this article we will look specifically at point 1 ...
The cost of renting a web host
Web hosting is an important factor in your website as it not only affects the potential performance of your website, it also affects the overall cost. And you pay web hosting fees for as long as you own your website.
How Much Should You Pay For A Web Host?
Quick response: A shared web host is usually cheap - expect $ 3 to $ 7 a month. VPS hosting, on the other hand, costs $ 20 to $ 30 per month.
There are different types of web hosting - all at different prices and with different features and options. In addition to finding the right features and price, you need to choose a reputable hosting provider. The right combination can lead to a life of bliss, but the wrong combination can cost you a lot more money than you expected.
What's the cheapest price per month to host a website?
Hostinger, GreenGeeks, TMD-Hosting, and Hostpapa are some of the cheapest hosting on the market. Their entry-level plans range from $ 0.99 to $ 3.49 per month.
For more information, see This List of Recommended Cheap Hosting. However, be aware that low cost web hosting is often associated with various problems. Also read my suggested solutions to these problems at the end of the article.
To help you make the right choice, we researched 100+ shared and VPS hosting companies and put together the following guide.
How much does a shared web host have to pay?
Here's what we found after studying 500 shared hosting plans.
Average shared hosting prices
- Entry level: Registration price = USD 2.91 / month, Renewal = USD 3.63 / month
- Mid-range: Registration Price = $ 5.24 / month, Renewal = $ 6.21 / month
Shared hosting per month costs cheap
The shared hosting industry is a highly competitive playing field - which is good for consumers like you and me. Not only are shared hosting usually cheap, but many of them offer great server performance and features.
Entry level hosting plans averaged $ 2.91 at sign up, with an average increase in renewal price of 25%. Mid-tier shared hosting prices rose significantly, averaging $ 5.24. However, with an extension of 18%, an overall shorter price increase was recorded.
Typically, users are only allowed to host one website for common entry plans. With mid-tier plans, most companies allow users to host unlimited domains.
Renewal prices with "free" hosting providers are the most expensive
Interestingly, the biggest price increases on renewal were attributed to hosts that also offered free web hosting. These showed significant price increases when their paid plans were extended - up to 2.711% more.
Booking discounts are like a honeymoon
While we've found that only 58 and 60 companies offer entry-level and mid-tier plans and increase prices on renewal, these companies also typically offer lower enrollment prices than competitors.
It is important to know, however, that signing up with a provider that offers significantly lower sign-up prices gives users a "honeymoon" period in which they have the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate the services on offer before making a final long-term decision.
Price is just one of the factors
Keep in mind that the cost of web hosting is a very sensitive issue as most providers offer different plans. As such, I advise you to look beyond cost to the exact features a web host offers before considering price.
Reasonable hosting plans at reasonable prices
- All six hosting companies charge below or similar to market averages and allow users to host unlimited domains on their mid-tier plan.
- The prices quoted are only valid for new registrations. All prices increase during the renewal.
- You can learn more about these web hosts from our reviews - A2 Hosting, GreenGeeks, Hostinger, Hostpapa, Interserver, and TMD Hosting.
- GreenGeeks and HostPapa are the only eco-friendly hosting companies on the list. Both buy clean energy credits to offset their electricity usage.
More information on shared hosting
By far the most widely available and chosen option, the term shared hosting is very literal. Your hosting space shares the combined resources on a single server.
For example, let's say a host tells you that your shared account is on a server with two 8-core Intel Xeon processors, 128GB of RAM, and RAID storage with unlimited SSD storage. Sounds good doesn't it?
Unfortunately, because you are in a "shared" account, you will be sharing these resources with as many other people as your host decided to set up the same server. There can be anywhere from ten to as many as a hundred shared accounts on a single server.
Shared hosting service
Since all the resources on the server are divided among the various accounts, the performance can be a bit confusing in some cases. If you share a server with many other dormant accounts that don't use up a lot of resources, you'll be fine. If you are on a server with many active, high-activity accounts, performance may be degraded as you wait for resource share.
Typically, shared hosting providers manage this by limiting the use of resources on shared servers. If you end up spending too much time on server resources, you may need to upgrade to a more expensive plan.
Shared hosting plans are usually the cheapest. As a result, you will find that most shared hosting plans have limited levels of service.
This may include fewer or no guarantees of availability and more limited customer service channels.
Costs for the joint renewal of the hosting
The web hosting business is incredibly competitive, and many hosting providers are often competing for market share with new customers. The price is one of the features that they can choose from.
This means that they often have fantastic buy-in offers for new customers. If you are not careful and delighted with these fantastic offers, you may end up paying you a premium in fees when it is time to renew your hosting plan.
Take the case of the cheapest hosting plan that SiteGround offers, for example. New customers are offered a buy-in for just $ 6.99, but the plan extends for a staggering $ 14.99. Always pay attention to the regular prices a plan charges and don't let buy-in discounts take you into account. These should be taken as a bonus, not the main reason you come up with a plan.
How Much Do I Have to Pay for VPS Hosting?
Average VPS hosting price per month
- Entry level: registration price = $ 17.01 / month, renewal = $ 18.19 / month
- Mid-range: registration price = $ 26.96 / month, renewal = $ 29.15 / month
Living between shared and dedicated hosting
Often times, VPS hosting is priced higher than shared hosting due to advanced features backed by better service level agreements and customer support. At the same time, expect to pay a lot less than you'd expect from a dedicated server.
VPS hosting prices vary a lot
Based on our 2020 Web Host Price Study - On the lower end of the scale, some VPS plans like those from SkySilk and HostNamaste can start as low as $ 2 a month. On the higher end of the scale, the price of VPS hosting can range up to the $ 2,100 price that SiteGround is looking for for its highest plan.
Service providers offering VPS plans consistently recorded relatively small price increases for renewals, with entry-level plans increasing by 7% on average and mid-market plans by 8%. Although the average prices were $ 17.01 / month (entry-level) and $ 29.96 / month (mid-range), it was also found that the range of premium plan providers was heavily skewed.
Basic VPS hosting prices are generally stable
Our research also found that VPS entry-level plans have largely remained stable, while prices for medium-sized plans have decreased by as much as 51% over the past year. A possible discrepancy in these numbers could be due to our increased sample size in 2020, which expanded the 50 providers we originally observed to 250.
However, it's worth noting that many hosting companies are increasing their VPS prices in 2021. We suspect that the pricing for cPanel licenses is the main reason for this.
VPS hosting plans at reasonable prices
- ScalaHosting also offers unmanaged VPS hosting which is considerably cheaper. Entry plans start at just $ 10 per month.
- You can find out more about these hosts in our reviews: Bluehost, InMotion Hosting, Interserver, ScalaHosting, TMD Hosting. Also see our Best VPS Hosting Picks for more choices.
- We have not included any "true cloud" hosting providers (similar service to VPS) such as Digital Ocean, Amazon AWS, and Google Cloud, etc. in our study.
- Cloud hosting may or may not be cheaper. Please read my study on cloud hosting pricing to learn more.
- Amazon AWS has a handy cost calculator for those who need to estimate their cloud hosting costs - play with it.
More information on VPS hosting
Where previously the only alternative to shared hosting was getting your own dedicated server, today you can opt for VPS. VPS gives you the illusion of having your own server, even though the entire environment is simulated.
VPS servers offer all the flexibility and features of a fully dedicated server. The only restrictions are those that the host places on the VPS account - usually in terms of physical resources like processor, memory, and storage.
With these features, VPS is an extremely cost-effective solution for anyone who is still not sure they need the immense resources required to manage a dedicated server.
VPS hosting performance
This is one of the key differentiators between shared hosting and VPS hosting. VPS hosting accounts are isolated. This means that the resources assigned to this account apply only to that account. If another WPS account on the server is using a lot of resources, your VPS account will not be affected.
More importantly, however, the VPS server often grants unrestricted access to features that are normally not available for shared accounts, such as: B. Root Access. The controls can be chosen by yourself to control which versions of some scripts are currently running.
These features make it seem like you are running a full-fledged dedicated server. Unfortunately, you also need to know what you are doing and you are responsible for very detailed server configurations. I get it wrong because you have a lot of headaches.
This guide will show you how VPS hosting works.
VPS accounts are often used by hosts who have more active websites that drive more traffic. Many web hosting providers therefore know that they need more attentive support - and sometimes pay higher fees for it.
VPS accounts are often backed up by higher availability guarantees and support levels.
VPS hosting renewal costs
VPS accounts are no different from shared accounts in the sense that web hosts compete for new customers' market share. Hence, it is not uncommon to find heavily discounted plans for new customers.
Again, beyond this point, it helps to look at the features of the plan and its actual renewal prices, rather than the original discount. The discounts for new customers can be as high as in shared hosting packages.
Some VPS hosting providers use a big discount as a catch, but their renewal prices go up by up to 300%.
Where do our numbers come from?
Our web host price research
WHSR Research devoted a significant amount of resources to analyzing over a thousand hosting plans. These plans have been offered by 250 companies in the shared hosting segment, with another 250 companies offering VPS hosting.
Shared hosting plans only concerned entry to the middle tier. For the purposes of our analysis, the definitions were simplified with entry-level plans for a single domain, while at least 10 (typically 25) domains were supported for mid-level plans.
VPS plans were more complex due to the immense range of services. We have observed plans that range from nano-sized packet servers to high-end packet servers.
