You have officially seen Disney Plus in Germany since March 24, 2020. The streaming service attracted numerous customers with a low price and the prospect of many films and series. Disney + now has more than 100 million subscribers. With the Star segment, the provider has massively expanded its range in 2021. Here's what you need to know about Disney Plus.

Disney +: price increase in 2021

Not only is the number of users growing at Disney Plus, the program is also growing continuously. After "WandaVision", some promising Marvel series will start with the provider in 2021 with "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" and "Loki". However, this has its price. Since February 23, 2021, new customers have been paying EUR 8.99 instead of EUR 6.99 for a monthly subscription or EUR 89.90 instead of EUR 69.99 for an annual membership. But don't worry: Disney won't leave its loyal users out in the rain: regular customers with a monthly subscription (which ran before February 23) pay another six months, i.e. the lower price until August 23, 2021. Owners of an annual subscription also receive a price advantage: Expiring annual subscriptions that are extended before August 23, 2021 cost only 69.99 euros for another year.

Disney Plus cost

The streaming service costs 8.99 euros per month or 89.90 euros per year - that's the Disney Plus price for access to the complete range including UHD / 4K reception and four parallel streams. A real competitive price! For comparison: the big competitor Netflix charges at least 7.99 euros for the restricted basic access with only one stream and reception in SD quality. Several simultaneous streams and HD or 4K resolution already cost 12.99 euros (standard) or even 17.99 euros (premium) per month.

If you opt for a Disney Plus monthly subscription, you can also cancel on a monthly basis. An annual subscription runs for twelve months and can be canceled at the end of the minimum term, otherwise it is extended again for a year. In terms of figures, the annual subscription is around 15 percent (almost 18 euros) cheaper than twelve monthly subscriptions. Annual subscribers therefore get two months for free as a bonus for long-term loyalty.

Receive Disney Plus: Supported Devices

In many living rooms, streaming devices are now just as much a part of the basic equipment as the good old televisions - which, as smart TVs, increasingly come with an internet connection and streaming functions. Disney knows that widespread distribution and, in turn, the support of as many streaming platforms as possible are necessary for success. You can therefore receive Disney Plus with almost all common devices. Corresponding apps are available for:

  • Browser (Chrome 75+, Chrome 10+, Firefox 68+, Safari 11+, Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.1+)
  • Android (smartphones, tablets & TV)
  • Apple (iPhone, iPad & TV)
  • LG Smart TVs (with Web OS)
  • Samsung Smart TVs (with Tizen)
  • Chromecast
  • Apple AirPlay
  • Sony PlayStation 4 and 5
  • Microsoft's Xbox One as well as Series X and S
  • Amazon Fire Tablets
  • Amazon Fire TV devices

Share your Disney Plus account with other people

Disney allows a maximum of four devices to stream simultaneously per account. Up to seven profiles can be created in order, for example, to only display age-appropriate content to underage users. Are these the perfect prerequisites for sharing a Disney Plus subscription not only with family in your own household, but also with friends and saving costs? Yes and no! Disney is at least aware that this is exactly what customers are trying to do.

Michael Paull, responsible for the streaming business at Disney, has made it clear that technologies are used to analyze user behavior and intervene if necessary. Disney is likely to tolerate so-called password sharing to a certain extent, especially at the beginning. If the number of devices used and the places where users use the service increase too quickly too quickly, this may have consequences - in other words: cancellation of the subscription. At this point it is also advisable to take a look at the competition: For example, Netflix makes it difficult to pass on passwords.

Contents: "Star Wars", Marvel, "Simpsons" & Co.

After many takeovers in recent years, Disney now has access to an impressive portfolio of films and series - in addition to the various Disney classics such as "Pinocchio", "The Jungle Book", "The Lion King", "Duck Tales" and " Chip & Chap "as well as more recent productions such as the" Pirates of the Caribbean "series. In the past, for example, the group took over the "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" series with Lucasfilm, although the latter cannot be seen on Disney Plus. With the purchase of Marvel, Disney secured the rights to popular comic book heroes such as Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Captain America - including the film adaptations of the "Avengers" series and its offshoots. With the purchase of Pixar, the group added animation films such as "Toy Story", "Cars", "Monster AG" and "Finding Nemo" to its range. Thanks to the Star expansion, there is now at last countless content for adults at Disney Plus, including:

The Mandalorian: Exclusive to Disney Plus

Like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, Disney also produces films and series exclusively for its streaming service in order to provide customers with ever new content. The driving force in this area in 2020 was the "Star Wars" series "The Mandalorian", which tells of a Mandalorian bounty hunter who, after the fall of the Galactic Empire, fought his way through the outer regions of the galaxy as a lone fighter - far away from the influence of the New Republic . The series takes place five years after "The Return of the Jedi" and is the first real series in the "Star Wars" universe. On March 22, 2020, ProSieben broadcast the first episode on free TV, the other seven episodes of the first season are only available on Disney Plus. Season 2 of "The Mandalorian" followed in autumn 2020.

Disney is planning several more "Star Wars" series. Initially, a seventh season of the popular animation series "Star Wars - The Clone Wars" will come - after a six-year break. It tells of the events between the films "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith". There should also be a series that plays before "Rogue One". And the character Obi-Wan Kenobi also gets its own series - with Ewan McGregor in the lead role, who already played the Jedi in episodes 1 to 3.

Disney Plus: Online shutdown for Disney Channel

The launch of Disney Plus had a serious impact on the Disney Channel. It started as a pay-TV broadcaster at the end of the 1990s, but switched to free-to-air television a few years ago. Children and young people in particular are addressed with a lot of cartoons and animation - also via app, live stream and media library. But that's over now. In favor of Disney Plus, the Disney Channel is almost completely shutting down its online activities. The smartphone app has been discontinued since March 6, 2020, the live stream of the television program ended and entire episodes of "PJ Masks", "Duck Tales" or "Oggy and the Cockroaches" are no longer available in the media library.

The linear TV program and the YouTube channel should, however, remain untouched. Disney obviously subordinates everything to its new streaming service and probably wants to avoid confusion. The Disney Channel and Disney Plus are two different offers from the Disney group. Disney Plus is the premium paid streaming service, while the Disney Channel broadcasts secondary or older productions on television.

Disney Plus: Integration in Sky Q?

In autumn 2019, the pay-TV broadcaster Sky removed the two channels Disney Cinemagic and Disney XD from its program. But with the Sky-Q app Disney Plus, there should be a comeback of Disney content on Sky in 2021. Sky is already pursuing a similar concept with Netflix. The agreement ensures direct integration of Netflix content in the Sky-Q platform. The advantage for the user: You don't have to open an additional app to access the content. Apparently Disney also wants to use this option. Whether the deal goes as far as with Netflix is ‚Äč‚Äčopen, however. Because Sky users now only need a subscription to see the content of Sky and Netflix.

Disney puts Netflix & Co. under pressure

Disney is causing movement in the streaming market and is putting the established providers under considerable pressure, especially Netflix. So far, the pioneer in streaming has been the home of Marvel movies. But like "Star Wars", the superheroes are no longer part of the Netflix catalog. TV series from the Marvel universe such as "Jessica Jones" and "Luke Cage" are still available, but here the producers have already announced the end - either with a narrated story or an abrupt ending. Disney is unlikely to allow its own content to run on the competition - at least not in the form of a streaming flat rate.

* The cheapest price may be higher in the meantime.
