Video calls are now also possible with Messenger (over 30 million users in Germany). The function will come in the coming days via an app update on Android devices (4.1 or higher), iOS (8.0 or higher) and Windows Phones (8.1 or higher), as WhatsApp has now announced in a blog post.

Android users have been able to use the video function in the beta version since the end of October (BILD reported). Now the feature is coming to all smartphones.

WhatsApp thus catches up with Facebook Messenger and Skype, where video calls are already integrated.

"In the past few years we have received many requests from users for video calls," WhatsApp explains the move. According to the company, the video calls are fully encrypted.

In the chat window, users can now choose between a voice and video call. During the call, the picture of the person called appears large, your own picture is latched in small.

For the phone calls you can either use the front camera or the normal smartphone camera and switch over during the call. The video function cannot be used in group chats.

The quality of the voice call should be adjusted depending on the Internet connection. WhatsApp wants to enable users in areas with poor internet connections to use the function.
