The visual stimuli are the most important source of information about the outside world for the brain. That is why eyesight also plays a special role in the neurobiological development of every baby. Baby eyesight has been researched very thoroughly in the past. That is why we know pretty well what a newborn or baby can actually perceive and what influence an adequate or lack of stimulation has on its development.

The sense of sight, which was least challenged in the mummy tummy, takes several years to develop fully. A baby's eyesight differs from that of an adult in several ways: visual acuity, visual width, width and depth, colors and focus:

Newborns and babies can meet their needs well in the first weeks of life, despite the severe restrictions. They recognize the face of mom or dad and can tell it apart from someone else's face. They are based on the hairline of the respective person. You can see best at a distance of about 20-30 cm, which is roughly the distance between the breast and the mother's face. Since they do not have to perform any fine motor activities, the lack of visual acuity is also not a problem.

How can you imagine a baby's world? Look at the little colorful train through the eyes of a baby:

The pictures shown here from the perspective of the babies are only a simulation of the baby's vision based on scientific studies.

Many scientists have studied the subject of eyesight in newborns and babies. A good summary of the examination methods and the results can be found in, among others Visual Development - Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Psychology (2017) by Janette Atkinson (English).
