Salary Comparison: These are the jobs where graduates earn the most

According to a survey by the Stepstone job portal, young professionals with an academic degree earn an average of 45,400 euros.

Anyone who has studied medicine, law or engineering receives the highest starting salary on average.

The salary also depends on factors such as company size, location and the university at which you studied.

After graduating from high school, many young people face difficult decisions. What profession do I want to pursue one day? What do I have to study for this? An important factor is the future salary. Since this topic is talked about cautiously in Germany, young adults often lack an important basis for decision-making.

The annual salary report for graduates of the Stepstone job platform provides some transparency. Like Business Insider, it belongs to the Axel Springer Verlag. An evaluation of the data from 13,000 career starters with an academic degree shows what salaries future engineers, doctors or social scientists can expect.

The average gross salary of career starters with an academic degree in Germany is 45,400 euros - around 24 percent more than with a completed apprenticeship. Those who have a master's degree or who have a doctorate receive around twelve or even 33 percent more than their colleagues.

“Despite the corona pandemic, employers are increasingly looking for employees again,” says André Schaefer, salary expert at Stepstone. Even in times of crisis, the following applies: the higher a qualification, the better the chances of a high starting salary.

Where there is the most salary

With regard to the different courses, the starting salaries vary immensely. Doctors (59,500), industrial engineers (52,800) with a master’s degree and lawyers (52,300) earn the most. The earnings of graduates of design courses, humanities scholars as well as historians and cultural scientists are rather poor. Despite years of study, they start with a salary between 35,800 euros and 36,400 euros.

Career starters who have studied at the University of Stuttgart also have good prospects: the average salary for graduates here is around 52,9000 euros. With an average of 52,500 euros for their first job, students at TU Darmstadt will later be among the top earners. The East Bavarian Technical University in Regensburg made it to third place in the university ranking. Those who sit here in the lecture hall then get an average starting salary of around 51,400 euros a year.

Industry differences of up to 17,000 euros

Even if it is currently weak: The auto industry still pays the best. Those who gain a foothold in the industry after graduation can expect an average salary of 51,700 euros. In the aerospace industry (51,100 euros) as well as the chemical and petroleum processing industry (49,900) you also earn very well as a career starter.

Those with an academic degree in the hotel and catering industry earn significantly less - with an average of 34,000 euros per year, the starting salary is the lowest in these sectors. Likewise, graduates in the leisure and tourism industry (36,100 euros) as well as in agency, advertising, marketing and PR (36,600 euros) can expect a comparatively low starting salary.

The bigger the company, the higher the salary

In terms of company size, employees in a company with more than 10,000 employees make the most money. With an average annual salary of 50,500 euros, they are eleven percent above the average.

Medium-sized companies with up to 1,000 employees pay slightly less with an average of 46,500 euros. Those who start with a smaller employer get around 42,300 euros as their starting salary - which is around seven percent below the average.

Smaller employers who employ up to 50 people pay career starters 42,300 euros - around seven percent less than the average.

Salaries are highest in southern Germany

Career starters with an academic education receive top starting salaries in southern Germany, namely 47,800 euros in Baden-Württemberg, 47,400 euros in Bavaria, and 46,400 euros in Hesse. Eastern German states such as Saxony (38,400 euros), Saxony-Anhalt (39,400 euros) and Thuringia (40,100 euros) are well below the national average.

The same trend is reflected in the cities: In Stuttgart (49,400), academic career starters earn the most. Munich (48,400 euros) and Frankfurt am Main (47,600 euros) follow at a short distance.
