How does technology not kill creativity
7 tips for creative rituals: Routine and creativity make friends
Does routine kill creativity? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! There is another way: creative rituals help generate ideas and promote creativity.
Routine kills creativity?
Often heard and sounding largely plausible: Routine kills creativity! And then all routines are defamed.
Yes, most routines are more about convenience than creative results. Routines determine our daily grind. Allow me to juggle coffee to bed early in the morning with a minimum of collateral damage, use a toothbrush and razor without mutilating myself, and then find my way to the office. All of this without needing too many conscious thoughts. I do it as I have internalized it, just no unnecessary detours. Many potential new discoveries are left behind.
Routines are processes that from our point of view have proven themselves. And as long as that is actually the case, they can also be very useful. At least if I design it well and change it in good time, if there are good reasons for it. After all, the earth keeps turning.
Reputation Management: Many Routines Are Better Than Their Reputation!
And now for the salvation of honor: The fundamental hostility between routines and creativity is not entirely correct. There are also routines - I'll call them rituals to clarify this - which do an excellent job of creativity: creative rituals!
There are good routines and limiting ones.
7 tips for creative rituals
The creation of your own creative rituals is very effective. Creative rituals are not actually creativity techniques. There are invitations to break out of everyday life for a certain time and to open up to new ideas.
1. Secure ideas with the most important creative tool
For example, to ensure that good ideas are not lost, a notebook and pen that are always at hand work wonders. Some even have them ready next to the bed in order to be able to immediately secure any nocturnal inspirations and be able to fall asleep again with peace of mind. Long live the notebooks!
2. Secure creative freedom
It is worthwhile to plan fixed creative freedom in the routine of the daily routine, which can be designed according to personal preferences. So describes Ernest L. Rossi in his book "20 Minuten Pause" about the meaning of breaks for people. He assumes a ninety minute rhythm of the human body and mind, the various phases of which have different functions. These rhythms influence our concentration, creativity, imagination, imagination and many other areas. However, our culture does not yet pay sufficient attention to these rhythms. Often they are not only ignored but also combated. The negative consequences for your own well-being and thus also for your creative performance are immense.
So deal with the opportunities that arise for you here or take care of yourself and what is good for you. When is the best time for your creative phase and how can you create the right framework for it?
Many swear to move to shake their minds. Whether for a walk or a marathon; find out what works for you. Activities with a playful element are particularly recommended.
4. Creative islands
It is very helpful to visit places that help you to unwind and provide a playground for the creative parts to develop. Outside or in your favorite corner: a change of location works wonders. Many writers are said to have been particularly inspired to draw on unlimited resources in cafés. Please also pay attention to the side effects; a coffee may be beneficial, but at some point the beneficial effect no longer increases, only the side effects.
5. Ideas for creative rituals
Read the biographies of those people who are recognized for their creative achievements. These reports provide insight into which rituals have been found helpful to writers, artists, and other creative people. Their approach cannot be adopted without reflection, but they are of value as inspiration.
Music we like encourages the release of dopamine and serotonin. Encouraging music should stimulate creativity. I observe that in myself and the effect of music has been studied many times around the world.
Simone Ritter from Radboud University in Nijmegen and Sam Ferguson from the University of Technology in Sydney devoted a study to the connection.
The Result: Listening to encouraging music while you work can develop your creativity and problem-solving skills. Classical music in particular, with positive and powerful qualities, encourages many people to think creatively. Pieces composed by Antonio Vivaldi are often cited as examples. I personally choose from very different styles of music. Depending on the situation, the topic, my current state and the desired state, another piece of music provides the right impulses. It is worth experimenting.
7. Stay tuned
New habits can be challenging at first. This is especially true when they collide with established habits. The easiest way is to combine new habits with existing ones. Regular repetition then leads to conditioning. Rituals, once internalized, at some point feel like something completely normal. In this context, the aim is to consolidate the framework and to keep the processes within the framework flexible and creative.
